There are many ideas on this topic; discuss, share, do what you will.

First of all, i think that spells work the best when they come straight from the heart. Of course, other spells work too, and can be great to get inspiration, but the spell you make is YOUR spell, with your intentions and the best way to explain that what you want to happen.

See I think I touched on this earlier but in my mind spells fall into 2 categories. 1. Well disguised prayers 2. Spells that draw from personal power. I'll elaborate more on this later, it's my birthday today and I'm a tad busy What I mean by carefully disguised prayers are spells that call deities to aid them, or anytime people say things like "this spell is just 'asking' the universe for something you'd like changed." That's a common enough ideal I'm sure you've heard of it. By power from within I'm talking about spell work that does not reference deities, and seems to be more focuses on ingredients, the steps involved, symbolism, etc, etc, etc. Do you agree?

Would your #2 also be inclusive of Spells where the caster syphons power out of something else instead of tapping their own?

Yes that would be inclusive. I often wonder if the simple act of using ingredients isn't just that, syphoning out the power for use in the spell.
but I get what your saying, and I agree.
